Rising Los Angeles comic dead at 28

An up-and-coming comic in the Los Angeles comedy scene died on Tuesday at the age of 28.

Ken Flores — identified by his family as Kenyi Flores — was found dead at his home Tuesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Times reports. No cause of death was immediately provided.

Flores was originally from Chicago but found success working with popular Southern California-based comedians, including Gabriel Iglesias and Jo Koy, the Times reports.

Flores used that success to shine a spotlight on other Latino comedians with his “LatinXL” show at the Comedy Store in Chicago, and a tribute posted to the show’s Instagram page paid homage to his impact.

“LATINXL came from an idea over late night pre-pandemic convos and backyard covid shows to do something together- to break Latinos into opportunities that would usually be hard to land… while also getting our own stage to refine our comedy and enjoy our friendship while chasing our dreams…,” the statement said. “LatinXL WOULD NOT exist without Ken. The XL was a nod to Ken for having an ‘XTRA large personality’ and being such a force…which crowds all over the country would inevitably love. Our hearts are with his family. Our grief is shared amongst all our friends and peers.”

“We were honored to share your talent on our stages. You were greatness, and it was only a matter of time until the whole world saw it. You were also kind and a tremendous friend to all lucky enough to know you. We love you Ken, thank you for all the laughs,” the tribute said.

In the Improv’s comments, prominent comedians like Bobby Lee complimented him as a “beast on stage.”

While his professional talents were noticed, he will also be remembered for his generous nature, as noted by comedian Sampson McCormick.

“Ken was a great comic and a cool guy,” McCormick wrote. “Sending love to his family.”
